Katie Hodges

Katie is a freelance trumpet player based in London performing as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral musician. She studied at Royal Holloway, University of London, graduating with a first class degree, followed by a Masters' Degree in Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Katie's passion is for playing and reviving the art of the natural trumpet. Since her studies with natural trumpet virtuoso Jean-François Madeuf at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland, Katie performs regularly around Europe and is bringing the “real” trumpet to Early musicians and audiences in the UK.

Much in demand on the instrument, Katie is probably the only female to ever have played natural trumpet at the Royal Albert Hall, performing in the BBC Proms with Concert Spirituel for their magnificent Fireworks concert in 2012. Other memorable performances have been with De Swaen (Amsterdam), the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, and as guest soloist at the Anghiari Festival. On baroque trumpet Katie has worked with ensembles including Florilegium, the International Baroque Players, Capella Cracoviensis, the Classical Opera Company, Bampton Classical Opera and Orchestra of the Golden Age.

On the modern trumpet Katie's experience is wide-ranging, from working with orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Britten Sinfonia, to solo work including numerous premières, to session work for BBC Radio 4 and TV appearances with Kanye West.

Katie is also an active educator, teaching in schools, coaching and giving masterclasses. She is the natural trumpet tutor at the Chalemie Summer School, and has guest-lectured at Trinity College of Music and University College London. When not playing the trumpet Katie enjoys cycling and walking on the Isle of Skye.
